Ahead of its harvest season, Portugal has turned to Morocco to recruit 400 agricultural workers. Portugal’s Minister of Labor Ana Mendes Godinho has announced the launch of a pilot recruitment project after a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Economic Inclusion and Employment, Youness Sekkouri. Godinho said that she had “a fruitful meeting” with her Moroccan counterpart, adding that they “have decided to launch a pilot project that benefits all parties."
In view of this, Moroccan workers are expected to undergo training and learn Portuguese before moving to Portuguese fields. Moroccan minister Seekouri welcomed the new partnership, stating it represents a “new generation” of agreements for “decent employment” with full respect for workers’ rights.
Earlier this month, Portugal passed a decree to speed up long-stay visa processes for citizens of the Community of Portuguese language countries (CPLP) to address the labor shortage. Welcoming the migration reforms, Minister Godinho said that the decree “is absolutely fundamental in the organization of regular and orderly flows of immigration,” adding that it helps address the “urgent needs of human resources” to revitalize the local economy.
