Avocado exports from the southern hemisphere and Mexico will increase by 29% this season

According to Iqonsulting's “2022 Yearbook: International Avocado Market”, avocado exports from the southern hemisphere and Mexico have shown a 29% increase in the volume shipped this season.

Mexico has been the largest supplier of fruit in the region analyzed, with a 58.4% share, managing to dispatch a total volume of 1,227,070 tons during this year. It was followed by Peru with a 25.2% share of exports and with a total volume of 557,010 tons shipped in the last season. Chile ranked third with a 6% share in shipments and a total export volume of 126,508 tons of avocado.

Chile mainly exported and produced Hass avocados, a variety that accounts for 99.7% of the varieties produced.

The configuration of the main markets for Chilean export avocados has changed over time. Twenty seasons ago the main destination was the United States; however, since the 2012/13 season, the main market has been Europe (67.7% share in shipments) and to a lesser extent Latin America (18.5% share in shipments).

Avocado production is concentrated between the regions of Coquimbo and O'Higgins. However, the Valparaiso region ranks first in exports, with a 65.4% share in shipments in the last 2021/22 season and a total dispatched volume of 82,774 tons. In addition, this region has the largest area planted in the country, with a total of 17,000 hectares.

The Chilean domestic market continues to be attractive in terms of prices and a high per capita consumption of about 5.7 kilos of avocado. That's why much of the national production remains in the country, with an approximate volume of 110 tons in the last season.
