SPAR consistently continues on its path to plastic reduction, converting the packaging of SPAR Natur*pur Blumauer Organic Cherry Tomatoes, 2 varieties of SPAR PREMIUM Cherry Tomatoes, and SPAR Austrian Midi-Rispentomatoes to 100% cardboard.
Already available in new packaging are the SPAR Austrian Midi TOVs and the SPAR PREMIUM Cherry tomato mix. Despite the higher costs for the raw materials, the prices of the tomatoes will remain the same for customers despite the packaging changeover.

The topic of plastic-free packaging is on everyone's lips - which is why SPAR continues to work intensively on optimizing packaging in the interest of environmental protection. "Resource and environmentally friendly packaging has always been a concern for us at SPAR. That is why we have worked intensively on the fact that we are now converting all tomato packaging of the SPAR brands SPAR, SPAR Natur*pur and SPAR PREMIUM to 100% cardboard in the interest of our environment", SPAR CEO Mag.
Markus Kaser is pleased and adds: "Even if the new cardboard packaging costs us more than the previous plastic packaging, customers will not have to pay more as a result. SPAR will absorb the additional costs because our commitment to environmental protection is genuine." The packaging is necessary for small tomatoes such as cherry tomatoes and midi TOVs because the fruit is harvested fully ripe. Therefore, any pressure on the fruit, for example, in larger boxes or even when selected by customers, must be avoided.
Saving plastic together with SPAR
Avoiding, reducing, and promoting recycling is the focus of the "Save plastic together with SPAR" plastic reduction program. For example, SPAR started laser labeling, so-called "Natural Branding," for fruits and vegetables years ago, biodegradable packaging for organic fruits and vegetables is common practice and the purchase of meat, sausage, cheese & Co. at the delicatessen counters of SPAR significantly saves packaging compared to self-service. Customers can also bring their containers for deli shopping at SPAR. SPAR also carries the largest range of beverages in returnable bottles among area-wide supermarkets.
