The government of Tajikistan has banned the sale of onions abroad. Head of the Regional Customs Department for the Sughd region, Zafar Mahmadiev, explained the reason for this step: “The supply of the country's markets with all kinds of goods and products is analysed by the government of the country. Recently, the price of onions has increased by 2-3 times compared to previous years. In order to ensure domestic markets and regulate prices for products, the export of onions is now prohibited.”
The export of onions abroad has been suspended for about two weeks. According to customs authorities, 6 tons of onions were exported from the Sughd region in the first six months of this year, which is 10 tons less than a year earlier. Meanwhile, this year the price of onions has increased from 1-1.5 somoni to 5-6 somoni.
