Global Melon & Wantermelon Event, of Rijk Zwaan, from July 4 to 12:

"We want to encourage melon and watermelon consumption through new experiences"

From July 4 to 12, the seed house Rijk Zwaan will again welcome everyone to the new edition of the Global Melon & Watermelon Event to present its current portfolio of solutions for the global melon and watermelon market, including new launches and new concepts that will be unveiled during those days. From July 4 to 6, the focus will be on international visits, with Rijk Zwaan representatives and international customers, while the rest of the days will have a more Iberian accent.

"Our goal is to showcase the diversity of our global portfolio. We have already confirmed many international visitors for the first few days. We want to make an impact and create a connection between the product and the market through the different links in the chain, including producers, marketers and retailers," says Bernardo Cuenca, Melon and Watermelon Crop Coordinator at Rijk Zwaan.

During these days, commercial materials will be presented for each of the melon types, such as the Piel de Sapo, yellow, Galia and a wide range of orange-fleshed melons. New products will stand out under the Ready to eat concept, like the long-life cantaloupe or the Mellissimo concept in Piel de Sapo, with sizes between 1.5 and 3.6 kg, a long shelf life, great flavor, uniformity and consistency, with a focus on supplying for 365 days a year and cultivating in different origins and for more and more markets," said the specialist.

Two different groups of triploid watermelons will also be shown, both red-fleshed with different types of skin, as well as the Tropical concept, with great innovations in flesh colors other than red, such as yellow, among others that will be unveiled at the event. New watermelons with micro-seeds, intended for double use in monoculture, of the crimson, sugar baby and tiger types under the Sandissima concept will also be showcased.

Within the seeded watermelon segment, new large-caliber varieties will also be presented, intended for markets such as the Middle East, Morocco, Central Europe and Latin America. In turn, a new concept of 1.5-kilo watermelon will also be shown which is characterized by a consistent flavor, texture and postharvest, and which aims to promote new forms of watermelon consumption. "There will be new projects from companies which involve the development of new types of watermelon with new shapes, sizes and pulp colors," says Bernardo Cuenca.

The motto of the event will be Colorful life. "Our life is full of colors and our range of varieties and solutions target a wide variety of markets and consumers. We want to encourage melon and watermelon consumption through new experiences, through different sizes, skin types, flesh colors and flavors," says the Melon and Watermelon Crop Coordinator at Rijk Zwaan.

Unlike the latest editions, the event this time will be more physical, as the anti-COVID measures have become more flexible; however, it will continue to be a hybrid event, with live connections with participants from different countries who have been unable to travel to the event.
