"Demand for so-called super exotics increases significantly, especially during the festive season. These include carambola, physalis, and lychee," says Falk Schlusnus, TFC Holland's CEO. This Dutch BayWa subsidiary focuses on exotic fruit and vegetables. "People want to serve something extra special at family gatherings. And the time to try something new certainly plays a role."
"Demand for exotics is generally very high, especially in winter." Falk points out that this is also true for mangoes. "The general demand for mangos is growing. Consumer consumption is highest in fall and winter." Brazil is currently TFC's main mango source. That country's ideal growing conditions prompted its choice. Its season peaks from October to December.
That perfectly matches the European market's increasing demand during that same time. "We've been working very closely with our growers for many years. Together, we've developed the range in a market-oriented way over decades. For example, we're the only producer growing significant quantities of the very popular Osteen variety for export to Europe. That's a real marketing plus," says Falk.
Popular
TFC sees opportunities to tap into mangoes' growth potential. "Their popularity is increasing steadily. But there are still many people who don't regularly reach for this fruit." The exotic fruit and vegetable trader attributes this to things like the often variable quality of mangoes offered in the supermarket. "We always want to get high-quality mangoes to our customers' shelves."
"So, we rely on specific varieties and selected production sites. We have state-of-the-art storage and ripening technology too." TFC is convinced that eating ripe mangoes will become the norm. "That's why we've been working with Softripe technology for mangoes for several months," explains Falk. "Now, our ripeners achieve edible fruit of consistent, truly excellent quality."
He has also noticed that consumers want products to be produced under fair conditions. "We're a global player. We, therefore, take our responsibility toward people and the environment seriously. We do so by ensuring ethically, socially fair production conditions in the countries of origin. The Fair Trade certificate helps us communicate our commitment transparently," Falk concludes.
