The very rare geranium volvaire mushroom only grows on the bagasse of geraniums and is sold at a minimum of 150 euros [170 USD] per kilo as it is very popular among star chefs for its woody taste.
Rodolphe Morel, a farmer in Grand Coude (Reunion Island) harvested more than 1.5 kg this week. “This mushroom is very rare. It only grows in very specific conditions with a particular level of humidity and sunlight. Since the geranium season at the beginning of November, we have been finding some in very small quantities on our farm.”
It's a mushroom that must be harvested very quickly, as it is no longer edible the following day.
