James Ryan - Magnus Kahl Seeds

Supplying quality onion and niche allium products to the global market

Magnus Kahl Seeds began producing and marketing open pollinated onion seed in Australia in the 1930’s. Since this time, after many decades of extensive breeding, they have added a range of high quality hybrid and open pollinated onion products to their portfolio.

Focussing only on alliums, the company has also elected to go down the path of offering niche products such as hybrid shallots and a speciality onion range. In recent years an increase in demand from the European market led to the company opening an office in Belgium.

"This has created a base from which we can service our European customers more frequently and ensure our seed is packed and dispatched in a timely manner," explains James Ryan from the company.

"The Magnus Kahl Seeds hybrid and open pollinated onion seed range consists of yellow, white, red and pink varieties. We are breeding for short day, intermediate day and long day markets. Breeding in Australia allows our team to work on material in the hot dry conditions of South Australia, as well as the cooler climate zones of Tasmania. Breeding in diverse weather climates gives our range great adaptability making our products suitable for many onion growing regions around the world."

Specialising in Alliums, the shallot and niche onion seed range has given Magnus Kahl Seeds a presence outside of the conventional onion market. Growers in global shallot markets such as Europe, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia have grown the Magnus Kahl Seeds shallot range since 2012.

"Our shallot offering consists of a round, more traditional shaped shallot, a semi-long type and echalions/banana shallots. The shallots are bred for long term storage, are high yielding and the vigour allows for strong Pink Root and heat tolerance. Also featured in our niche onion seed range are pearl and boiler onions, sweet onions, as well as cipollini and dehydration varieties."
