Top fruit sales are currently continuing steadily in the Netherlands. Usually, many of our growers' Polish laborers go home for the holidays. That makes for a lot of sorting work on location," says Zweer van Aalsburg, Product Group Manager at FruitMasters.
"For example, there are always many Gieser Wildeman pears being promoted during Christmas week. And a lot of sales with Boskoop are planned for the following week."
"There are considerably fewer apples this year. We're keeping volumes back for our regular domestic clients. So, we'll sell 90% of our apples on the Dutch market. And there are fewer planned promotions than in other years. I think we'll finish the Elstar season earlier than usual. Prices are good. Elstar, Jonagold, and Boskoop are all going for a euro. Pear prices are at a different level. They vary from €0,50 to €0,70, depending on the grading."
"Pear exports are also continuing at a steady pace. The demand for the Christmas weeks is now being filled. The Scandinavian countries are also entering this market. That's because they've now run out of their own product. We're largely dependent on export with our pears. Several factors, therefore, play a role in this for the rest of the season. These include Brexit and COVID-19. But, we'll sell all of it, eventually. The pear's quality is excellent. The apples have more quality issues. That's as a result of wind and hail damage," Zweer concludes.
