First container of Colombian avocados shipped off to China

On May 28, the first container of Colombian avocados left the port of Buenaventura for China. This shipment belongs to Mr. Avocado, a company that has played an important role in obtaining access for Colombian avocado to China.

“These volumes are expected to arrive at the port of Shanghai on June 29. When supplying these avocados, we will give priority to fresh produce supermarkets and chains who have long-term partnerships with Mr. Avocado,” Liu Mosu, General Manager of the company said. "These avocados will be available in early July. It is not yet easy to estimate the price at the moment. We need to wait for the shipment to arrive and set the pricing according to the quality and market conditions at that time. If the market feedback meets our expectations, we will also increase the import volume in the later period.”

“Each year after the Spring Festival, Chilean avocados enter the end of the season so their quality is not stable, while avocados from Peru only just hit the market so their supply is insufficient,” Ms. Liu said when talking about the advantages of the imported avocados from Columbia. “So there is a period of time when there’s a shortage of imported avocados on the market. The product from Columbia can effectively fill this market gap."

"Chinese consumers' awareness and acceptance of this fruit have been growing at a lightning speed. A few years ago, imported avocados were only available in first-tier cities, but today, the demand in second- and third-tier cities is also growing at a high speed. Our sales volume has increased by almost 65% compared with the previous year,” Ms. Liu said. “Due to China’s huge market potential, all major avocado producers are actively seeking market access. The establishment of Mr. Avocado has not only helped Avocado to be exported to China but has also played an active role in ensuring quality."

Mr. Avocado is the first company to introduce ready-to-eat avocados to Chinese consumers. In 2017, the company set up a specialized avocado ripening center in Kunshan. "Compared with the popular way of ripening avocados using banana ripening warehouses in the Chinese market, this specialized ripening center uses a full set of equipment imported from North America, which maximizes the taste and quality of the fruit."
