China: Price of tangerines 16% lower than last year

This is the season when tangerines enter the market in large quantities. There are numerous production areas in Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, and Shaanxi. All their tangerines start to arrive in the Beijing market at around the same time. At the moment, the price of tangerines is relatively low compared to last year when 0.5 kg cost about 1 yuan [0.15 USD], whereas this year 0.5 kg they cost 1.7 yuan [0.26 USD]. That is a drop of around 16%.

There are two main reasons for the drop in prices. First, this year tangerines do not sell as well as last year, and customers have plenty of choice. Second, the harvest this year benefited from good weather conditions and increased. The tangerines from Zhejiang in particular are a bit cheaper, while the small tangerines from Fujian are a bit more expensive. At present, the volume of tangerines entering the market is still increasing, but as the weather in the north grows colder, and transport and insurance costs increase, the market price of tangerines will also increase, but not by much.
