"Nico Schaft (888 Fruit Company): "Last Tamarinde container from Thailand next week"

"Less and less importers of Chinese chestnuts in Europe"

The Chinese import season is in full swing again at 888 Fruit Company, which has a wholesalers on the market in Rungis. "We have been part of the import season of pomelos, nashi pears and ginger for years and we received the first chestnuts at Cool Control in Maasdijk last Friday," says Nico Shaft. The last container of Thai Tamarindes of the season will also arrive next week.

According to the importer many European importers have stopped importing chestnuts, as it hasn't been simple for the last two seasons. "We are continuing. We are primarily focusing on the large sizes (30/40), which are most popular on the European market. People will pay the most for these, as they are 1 euro per kilo cheaper than the European chestnuts. We supply them in the well known 5 kg jute bags." Nico says the chestnuts are popular as ever. "Now that it is getting colder, more and more people are opting for chestnuts. The European target audience appreciates chestnuts, but the Asian public also like to buy them. The Chinese don't roast the chestnuts, but cook them."

Next week 888 Fruit Company will also receive the last container of the season with Tamarinde from Thailand. "Not a well known product, but we are one of the largest importers of it in Europe and receive around 10-12 containers annually. We have been importing it for almost 20 years. It remains a niche product, but one that my Europe customers know where to find me for. There is scarcity in Thailand this year due to the lower harvest and because the Chinese are sourcing more and more Tamarinde directly from Thailand. This is why prices are 30% higher than usual," concludes Nico.
