Canary bananas gain ground in Switzerland

The banana brand Canary Gold has got a foothold in the Swiss market thanks to the actions carried out by Europlátano over the past year. In fact, one year after its launch, it has managed not only to distribute the product, but also to consolidate its continued consumption through the fruit's distribution by Alifresca Spain S.L. and Bargosa S.A. in the country's leading food chain Coop Suisse, where the "canary gold" already stands out for its taste and quality. This has allowed the OPP to continue strengthening its growth in the islands, which will mean that this year's banana production will exceed 50,000 tonnes.

Canary Gold is exported to Switzerland, one of the most demanding European markets, where it has become a leading name in terms of quality and flavour guarantee. Defined as the "Canary gold", the quality that makes the product stand out is precisely its flavour; "the main attribute of Canary bananas," stresses Europlátano manager Antonio Luis Brito. "That's why the moment the consumer tastes it, he/she is captivated." In fact, during this year, when the brand has been launched, the OPP has organised promotions, both in the Archipelago and in Europe, that have allowed consumers to taste the product.

Thus, Canary Gold was present this September in the celebration of the World Tourism Day of Tenerife with a stand in the arrivals area of the Reina Sofía airport, where about 15,000 tourists coming from international flights were received and entertained with tastings of the product. This initiative has allowed the OPP to see Swiss passengers recognising the brand they buy at the Coop supermarket in their own country.

Furthermore, and also with the aim of advertising and positioning its main brands in the domestic and international markets, Canary Gold was present in October through the distributor Bargosa at the Fruit and Vegetable Fair held at the IFEMA, in Madrid, where it showcased the quality of the bananas produced by Europlátano to thousands of professionals in the food sector.

Both Canary Gold and Gabaceras, the only banana brand awarded by consumers for its flavour (Best Flavour of 2014 and 2016), stand out for their taste and long shelf life, as well as by a Global Gap quality certification. They meet numerous quality and safety standards and requirements, from field to packaging.

The success of Canary Gold in Switzerland is due to the decided commitment to quality of Europlátano and the efforts made by this OPP to guarantee the viability of the Canary banana sector. Europlátano brings together more than 800 growers, who for years have demonstrated that Canary bananas have a bright future, as long as the product aims for the niche markets focused on quality that generate the necessary returns to ensure the viability of the activity. Europlátano is already working to continue expanding in other European countries, where tests are already underway.

In fact, Europlatáno is currently the Canary firm with the highest volume certified under GlobalGap, about 45,000 tonnes from more than 800 hectares. It also has the Integrated Production certification, the Ecological Production Certificate and the Carbon Footprint Seal. The fact is that Corporate Social Responsibility is one of the maxims of the company, as well as environmental protection. That is why the brands marketed by the OPP stand out for the quality of their products and receive the recognition of consumers in domestic and international markets.

Europlátano expects the volume it is shipping to the Swiss market to continue increasing, and also to open new markets in northern Europe, as the presence of Europlátano banana at COOP is not going unnoticed for other important European customers, who are interested in bringing this product to their shelves.
