Sven Roosen, Gerrits Fruit:

“Top fruit market is no longer predictable”

The current market situation for pears is fairly good. “There is good demand especially for Conference. In the past two weeks, pear prices have slightly increased, and we hope to continue that,” says Sven Roosen from Gerrits Fruit. “Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult to look ahead.”

Not very predictable anymore
Roosen indicates that it is more difficult for apples, due to less demand. “Hopefully it will become better for apples in January, but that is also still uncertain. We have absolutely no clue as to what the top fruit market will do, it is no longer as predictable as it was a few years ago, and it could collapse at any moment.”

Fair amount of stock cleared
Roosen also says that according to data, the stocks are considerably lower than last year. “A fair amount has already been cleared. We expect that a fair amount of pears will arrive on the market in January. All in all, I expect the season will finish earlier than last year.”
