In September 2012, the European Fruit & Vegetable Working Group was founded during the global working session Fresh Produce Standards. This group, called GS1 in Europe-Fruit & Vegetables GS1 Standards Deployment in Europe, was founded to guarantee a harmonised implementation of the GS1 system in the fresh produce sector. During the third EU Fresh Info Forum & Roundtable, organised by Frug I Com, two new European guidelines for the legal aspects of labeling and tagging consumer units were presented to the industry.
The fresh produce trade is a global trade with suppliers throughout the world who have to trade efficiently. With the launch of these guidelines, the fresh produce sector takes a new step in efficient labeling and the observance of legislation. The guideline on legal label prescriptions contains relevant European instructions for the fresh produce sector for all kinds of units, i.e. consumer units and trade units, both processed and unprocessed, and instructs what needs to be put on the labels. The second guideline about labeling consumer units goes more deeply into best practices and sectoral agreements based on GS1 standards. This is part of a series of guidelines on the entire supply chain, which are published by GS1 in Europe.
