The coordinator of safety of the Mexican Association of Producers and Packers of Avocado (APEAM), Katia Aguilar Chavez, said that the main export challenge faced by the sector was complying with the guidelines issued by the Law of Modernization of Agricultural Production, which stipulates the safety certification of the avocados exported to the United States.
In an interview, Aguilar Chavez said that only approximately 50 percent of the 110 tons of avocados that are exported to the United States have safety certifications.
"The avocados exported must not have pesticide residues. This is achieved through the proper application of good agricultural practices," she said.
She also stated that, since 2012, the APEAM had constant safety programs. According to the Modernization of Agricultural Production Act, 100 percent of the producers must be certified by December 2017, otherwise avocado exports could decrease.
