“We are sort of a big experimental farm (350 hectares with more than 700 commercial varieties) for growers interested in growing our varieties. Every year we come up with 30 to 40 varieties,” explains Edo Ben Dor.

Ido Ben Dor further explains that their main agenda is to supply fruits all year round with the same quality in terms of flavour, colour and shelf life. Given the market trends, he says the company has around 20 varieties for each family to cover a season.

“Every two weeks we have a different variety in supply, as our main goal is to supply fresh products with the same flavour throughout the year. We target high end supermarkets such as Tesco M&S and Morrisons, so flavour and quality have to be the same throughout the year,” adds Ido Ben Dor.

Ben Dor has a breeding programme for plums, nectarines, peaches, pears, apricots and apples. Its latest innovation is the Nectagranates- Red Flesh nectarines which according to Ido Ben Dor are promising in terms of marketing.
“We have, for the last four years, developed better and improved red flesh varieties from all families in terms of taste and shelf life, from apricots to nectarines. Flavor is our top priority and the Nectagranates open new opportunities".
