Mexico: Best mango price since 1991

According to mango producers, mango prices haven't been so good since 1991. Currently, a 9-pound box of mangos costs $13 dollars in the United States because there's not enough production to export mangoes to other markets in the world at this point of the season.

The fact that there still is abundant flowering and fruit development at this time in the mango plantations has also been a determining factor so that producers are paid at an average of 17 pesos per kilo.

Mango producers said that, as there is a shortage of fruit that is ripe enough to be exported, only ten of the nearly 18 packaging companies that operated in the 2016 export season in Michoacan.

So far, according to information from Emex, the entity that brings together the packers, Mexico has exported 5,451,514 boxes of mango to the US, its main market. In turn, Michoacan has exported 1,777,680 boxes, i.e. 32.61 percent of the national total: However, this includes mangoes from Michoacan, Guerrero, and other producing states. This represents a 13.2 percent increase when compared to the same period last year.

It's worth noting that the price of mango plummets after each year's Easter period. However, according to the packers belonging to Emex, prices will remain high because there is no volume and because demand is currently higher than the offer .
