La Colmena, Paraguay's fruit capital, is ready for Christmas as its grape, apple, melon, and other fruits harvest has filled the air with the smell of clerico, a traditional Paraguayan fruit punch. According to the ABC Color newspaper, the productive community is getting ready to participate in the fifth edition of Expo Fruit, which will be held on December 19 and 20.
At this time, this community located 130 kilometres from Asuncion, is known for the abundance of fruit it has. The harvest of grapes, apples, and melons, the main fruits used to prepare the traditional clerico, gives this community in the Paraguari department a holiday atmosphere.
Fruit farmers are working with world class technology; they have about 400 plants of apples in the Miyamoto Farm, plus more than 70 hectares of grapes at harvest, mostly of the Niagara Rosada variety, which is the most common one used to make clerico.
