"Roberto Latorre: "Exclusive varieties a large success in whole soft fruit category"

Surexport moves in with Mooy and extends year round supply

For two years now Roberto Latorre has been representing the Spanish soft fruit producer Surexport from Almonte (Huelva). In the first period the receipt of the soft fruit took place on the IABC terrain in Breda, but as of May, Mooy Logistics has been taking care of logistics at Hazeldonk. As of 1 January 2016 Surexport will move into office space at Mooy in Hazeldonk. "Ideal, because we will be close to our product. Mooy takes care of the entire logistic services of storage and overhaul, customs, re-packaging, small packaging, labelling and transport."

"We are developing more and more into a year round soft fruit supplier for the Northern European retail. Soft fruit is a growing segment and the expectation we had at the start was correct, as there is still more than enough growth," says Roberto. "At the moment we are fully active in raspberries. Besides our productions in Spain and in the North of Morocco, Surexport also has its own cultivation projects in Kenya and Agadir (south Morocco), where we can catch the period with less supply. The raspberry market is good, the volumes are as expected and the prices are good. We started in mid September and the season runs until the end of May."

Exclusive strawberry varieties
Although the strawberry cultivation in Spain is decreasing in favour of other berries, Surexport shows an increase in the strawberry cultivation. "We are growing another 10% in strawberries this year. There are small volumes coming from Spain and Morocco at the moment, but there will be full supply again from January," says Roberto. He says that the success in strawberries is in part a success due to the work with exclusive varieties, for which it has a collaboration with PSI. "We have now completely switched to the variety Victory and this has been a golden move."

"Besides our own production we are offering more fruit all year round. We made a start with blueberries from overseas last year and we are extending this line this year. At the moment we are receiving blueberries from Chile and the season is followed up at the end of January with production from Spain and Morocco. Blackberries are a smaller product for us. We have it available in the months of April, May and June," concludes Roberto.
