China: tomato prices reach new high

This year can be regarded as a good year for tomato farmers. Recently, tomato market prices are surprisingly high. The wholesale price for raw tomatoes climbed up to 10 Yuan per kilo. This is a new high since 1996 when the price was 4 Yuan per kilo.

Up to this moment, the tomato price in China was 4.40 Yuan per kilo. Last week the price was 4.10 Yuan per kilo, an increase of 7.32%. In November, the tomato price was 4 Yuan per kilo and in October 3.66 Yuan per kilo, an increase of 9.29%.

Last year, profits on tomatoes were small and even led to money-losing situations. This caused a steep decline in the amount of growing areas this year. Due to this the tomato market price is good overall. Recently, rain and snowfall affected the growth of vegetables and transports in a lot of production areas; as a result prices stay good even when greenhouse tomatoes enter the market.
