Large supply of pineapple puts pressure on the market

"Lemon and pineapple prices drop considerably"

There have been Spanish lemons at importer Zeghers since the start of October. There was space on the market then, the supply from overseas had stopped. The Spanish lemon season started with high prices. "They have dropped considerably since then," says Peter Maes of Zeghers. "The price was 2 Euro back then, and is now between 1.20 and 1.40 per kilo."

Causes
There were various causes of the decrease in price. "Of course there was more supply and the demand decreased. We were also troubled by the Turkish lemons for a whole. Especially in October there were larger volumes from this country. They also had low prices, which pulled those of the Spanish down too." The quality of the Spanish lemons is good. "But you do notice the influence of the weather in Spain. You can't store them for weeks." Zeghers is offering the variety Primofiori at the moment. "They predict the season will be over sooner, the estimates are it will be this year. We'll have to wait and see if they're accurate."

Pineapple market - a lot of large sizes

There was a scarcity of pineapple for a while, and the prices were very high. "In fourteen days this market has turned completely. Due to the large supply, there is serious pressure on the trade. A lot is coming into the ports and is all being pushed onto the market. There are especially large amounts of the bigger sizes and they are marketed for low prices. All hands on deck! They say the supply will reduce strongly after New Year, but these are only predictions."
