In recent weeks cherries from Chile, Australia and South Africa entered the Chinese market. The first arrivals of cherries were marketed at almost 1,000 Yuan (€150) for a box of 5 kg. Current prices have come down to 70 to 80 Yuan per 500 grams.
The high costs come partly from the transport methods used to ship the cherries to China. A number of importers chartered airplanes to transport the cherries from Chile to Shanghai. Now the season is underway, cherries also transported overseas are arriving on the market.
From November until the beginning of May all cherries on the Chinese market come from countries in the Southern hemisphere. In the summer Northern hemisphere countries such as the United States also supply the Chinese market.
