San Ramon, San Dionisio and Esquipulas, three municipalities in the department of Matagalpa have a municipal ordinance that prevents the entry of transgenic products into their areas and that, in parallel, boosts agro-ecological production, which is environmentally friendly.
Roger Soza Sancho, national facilitator of the Group for the Promotion of Ecological Agriculture (GPAE) said that producers were taking responsibility for implementing ecological production on their lands and supplying the population with products that were free of chemicals.
"I don't think technologies are bad, but when they are intertwined with the market and with money they become inhuman and immoral. Why? Because producers become irresponsible as they will do what it takes to sell and make a profit, so they damage the environment, they use large amounts of chemicals in their soils just to produce something," Soza said.
The GPAE supports a group of farmers in agro-ecological production, which Soza says is a slower but much more environmentally responsible process.
What is it?
Agro-ecological production is producing food preserving and respecting the environment, using practices that improve the soil's natural conditions (by using local and recycled materials, as well as native seeds) and protects the flora and fauna without using agrochemicals.
The fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, eggs, and milk obtained in agro-ecological production are free from toxic substances, are rich in vitamins and minerals, and have a rich natural flavor and odor.
Most importantly, Soza emphasizes, they don't contain cancer-causing nitrates.
Soza said that consumers in Nicaragua could identify this production as they would have the GPAE brand in their packaging.
Producers speak
Rene Ticoto, an agro-ecological producer, said they guaranteed consumers get foods that won't harm their health.
Meanwhile, Marin Arauz, the mayor of San Ramon, said that agroecology helped the land to remains fertile.
