Réunion: South African cabbage competing against domestic production

President of the CGPER, Jean-Yves Monarchy is annoyed because “Today farmers from Réunion are having to shred their cabbage production in the fields. 300 tons have been shredded this week, 500 tons will be shredded next week.” He is asking the candidates in regional elections to take a stand against fruit and vegetable imports from neighbouring countries. Local farmers are unable to sell their cabbage production as the markets and supermarkets are full of imported South African cabbage. They will have to wait for the imported stock to run out before putting local cabbage on the shelves.
