BLE market report week 46 2015

Tomatoes under considerable pressure

Tomatoes
The tomato trade is under considerable pressure. The availability clearly exceeded the sales possibilities. This was the case for all the product varieties. Over the last 4 weeks the availability of round, Spanish tomatoes has increased so much that they are currently flooding the market. The availability of Belgian tomatoes increased too. The supply of vine tomatoes from the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain has expanded. As a consequence the prices dropped, sometimes right at the start of the week and sometimes throughout the week. Despite the lower prices the trade didn’t pick up again. Special offers should increase the demand, 6 kg tomatoes or 5 kg vine tomatoes for 4 Euro. Only in Hamburg cherry tomatoes could escape these unfortunate developments.

Apples
Germany dominated the trade. The appearance and the taste were good. This meant that combined with a steady demand, which as usual increased from Thursday, the traders could get the requested prices.

Pears
The demand was quite low, and especially the smaller products could barely be sold. Nevertheless, prices mostly remained at the same level of the previous week.

Grapes
The range is dominated by Turkish, Italian and Greek grapes. The prices dropped quite often, due to the increased availability of import grapes from abroad.

Kiwis
The French campaign started with 3 kg wooden crates with 25 to 27 kiwis and 36 to 39 unpacked kiwis. Usually the supply matched the demand.

Oranges
The autumn weather continued to increase the sales opportunities. Overall the prices remained constant.

Small citrus fruits
The availability of Spanish Satsuma was limited. Turkey reached pole position. The prices remained constant at the level of the previous week.

Lemons
Spanish Primofiori lemons dominate the trade ahead of the Turkish Enterdonato lemons. There were plenty price reductions, however only Spanish batches in some places.

Bananas
As usual the supply and the demand matched and as usual the prices didn’t change much.

Cauliflowers
Because of the constant demand the price for German cauliflowers remained stable or got slightly stronger.

Lettuce
The supply of Spanish iceberg lettuce dominated and so determined the market. In the beginning the prices remained fairly constant due to the supply.

Cucumbers
The increased supply of Spanish cucumbers dominated the trade. The supply from central Europe became less important.

Bell peppers
The supply from Spain slowly increased, the increased supply could easily cover the rather low demand. A a result the prices dropped.

Onions
Most onions came from Germany, and overall the demand was stable. As a consequence the prices remained stable.
