USA: lower prices for walnuts

In September, half way during this years’ harvest, it was clear that the estimation of a 575,000 metric tons yield by the California Agricultural Statistics Service would be reached. This amount is higher than previous years.

In September the first shipments were 20% higher in volume. But it is too early to draw conclusions for the whole season. However due to a drop in prices by 30 to 40% it is expected that the quantities shipped will increase. The absence of China in the trade has played a role too in the decline of the prices.

Chile has almost sold out the extra light halved walnuts. There are only small amounts of light and dark walnuts now available. The prices of the Chilean walnuts are comparable with the Californian walnuts.

In general there is no reason to doubt the expectations of large harvest volumes worldwide. This is expected in Eastern Europe, USA, China and India. Good quality and quantity is available, but there is not a great desire to sell at reasonable prices.
