Jacco Merkens:

Redlove apples for the fresh market

The Redlove apple has been on the market for several years and in the Netherlands grower Jacco Merkens is the only one growing and marketing this variety. He is very enthusiastic about this variety and has different uses for this apple in order to increase its success rate. "We are seizing several opportunities to make Redlove a success. For example, this variety is not only destined for the fresh market, but can also be used to makes juices and ciders. This year Jacco signed a cooperation agreement with Schulp for Redlove apple juice. We believe this will increase Redlove's chances of success."

High demand
Jacco is satisfied with the harvest this season, "I am a bit disappointed in the volume, but the quality is good. The taste is also good. We harvested approximately 50 tons, 30 tons more than last year. We also already started planting for next season, and next year we expect to have around 100 tons. Then we will begin getting reasonable volumes." Jacco has just started supplying Redlove apples, "We started delivering Redlove apples this week, mostly to the hospitality industry. Demand is high but we are careful about selling too much, too soon. We promised most of our customers that we would have enough supply to keep delivering until Christmas. We also have to see if people take to the apples and if demand remains. I hope it does. It is a beautiful and unique apple, especially on the inside."

Added value
Juice sales are doing well, "We also made cider this year, but that is not doing as well as the juice. We are working hard to change that." The grower deliberately chose to use grade B apples, "New varieties fail regularly because growers aren't able to get added value from the grade B apples. That's why I put extra effort in here. Everything is not immediately perfect the first year in the fresh market, and if you only sell that volume, you won't be able to cover your costs."
