Italy: We do not harvest kiwis early

"Little more than a week has passed since the beginning of harvesting in Romagna and 70% of the fruit has already been harvested, so you can see how we are doing a great job at harvesting fruit at the right ripening stage," explains Ugo Palara from Agrintesa.

"Three quarters of our production is in Emilia-Romagna. Harvesting in Agro Pontino has not started yet and Veneto is at the end of the campaign. Volumes are in line with pre-harvesting forecasts and we are placing high-quality produce in storage."

"And all of this because we have waited for the right moment. In fact, we started harvesting on October 28th. We have been checking our producers' companies for 25 years - thanks to a pre-harvesting monitoring network, we test the evolution of sugar content, compactness and dry matter content. We do this because we want to work on a high-quality product that has been grown following strict protocols that also involve pruning, pollination and thinning."

"We have also defined specific product ranges - from organic to top quality lines that are at the basis of our work."

"This year, standards are excellent as the weather has been great until June. August was a little hot but September and October were fine, so we could improve both grades and parameters. We must also give credit to our cultivation specifications, as we do not harvest before it is time."

"The produce from our members is analysed before harvesting, because all production areas have different characteristics and must therefore be managed differently. Everything we do is to reach the maximum quality. Just think that, in the future, diversification and quality will be the most important characteristics to be successful on the most demanding markets."
