A low supply of pineapple is resulting in good prices this year. "At the moment the market is waning, but the fruit market is collectively calm. Compared to other years the pineapple prices are still at a high level, around 10 to 12 Euro, depending on the size. Over the next three weeks more pineapple is expected. This is why the product is being offered cheaper here and there," says Mario de Goede of Cool Fresh International.
"Normally November is a weak month for pineapple, but we started at a reasonable level. I hope we can finish the month on this level. Then we will have a good basis for a rise in December. In other years the pineapple prices in November were around 6 Euro and doubled in December," continues Marco, who says the quality of the pineapple is good.
The importer recently visited Costa Rica. "You can see and hear everywhere that the productions in the first ten weeks of 2016 will be very low. 2016 will be a year with a low pineapple production and this is already evident in the prices producers are asking for next year. It will be a challenge to neatly carry out the programmes in that period and the prices on the market will be high in this period. I expect a stabilisation of the market in April. At the moment planting is in full swing and this will result in higher productions in 2017."
