Stemilt samples Piñata® apples at New York media event
Stemilt’s signature apple variety, the Piñata®, was a standout at the Fall Food Fete press event held on Oct. 27 at the Helen Mills Event Space in New York City. Drawing nearly 70 top national food media spanning across print magazines, newspapers, blogs and broadcast, Food Fete was an evening full of gourmet food sampling and meaningful conversation with some of the nation’s largest media outlets.
Throughout the well-attended consumer press event, Stemilt served up samples of the Piñata apple and engaged in conversation around the apple’s unique flavor profile and heritage as well as Stemilt’s multi-generational family owned fruit company and its many other proprietary products and programs. As the only fresh produce product at the show, the Piñata apple was the talk of the event, making Stemilt’s table busy throughout the two-hour evening. The Piñata apple was so popular among influential attendees that many media came back a second and third time for additional tastes.
“Participating in Food Fete provides us the rare opportunity to connect our proprietary products with some of the top national media based in New York,” said Roger Pepperl, Stemilt’s Director of Marketing. “We love coming out here and sharing our fresh produce with top-tier media. Given the great feedback we received from event attendees, we are confident they will share their love of Stemilt and the Piñata with their readers.”
Among the influential food media at the event were Trish Clausen of Good Housekeeping, Lilian Woo of Fox News, Madeline Lankieb of the Food Network, Amy Capetta of Yahoo! Health and many more. The timing of the event lined up nicely with short-lead holiday coverage opportunities and capitalized on the timing by messaging to media that not only is the Piñata a great out of hand treat, but also an ideal baking apple, perfect for holiday pies and cakes.
The Food Fete press event also helped kick off the new season of Piñata® apples, which are available starting this month and will be on shelves through May. First introduced to the U.S. and Canadian marketplaces back in 2009, Piñata® is Stemilt’s exclusive apple variety. The apple was bred in Germany in the 1970s and is a cross between Golden Delicious and two heirloom varieties, Cox’s Orange Pippin and Duchess of Oldenburg. The fruit’s thin skin and unique sweet-tart-tropical flavor profile make it a great choice for fresh eating and baking.
