"CEO Jorge García Vicent: "Large demand for citrus expected in coming weeks"

garciaBallester group starts Seville packaging station

The main office of the Spanish garciaBallester group is located in Burriana (Castellon). The commercial team is formed by the companies sofWeiss and gBFresh for the Eastern and Western European market respectively. The company has packaging stations in Burriana, Vasilisa and Tortosa and its own plantations in Catalonia (350 hectares), Andalusia (80 hectares) and Valencia (45 hectares).

A first for the company is the opening of a packaging station in the area of Seville for processing the oranges from Southern Spain. "This way we can increase our supply and service towards our customers," says CEO Jorge García Vicent.

The director looks back on a good start to the season. "There is less volume than in previous years, which has lead to there being relatively high prices for an extended time. Due to an a-typical spring the flavour is good but the external or visual quality is less, due to a large part of the harvest coming from the second blossom. We expect for a large demand for both mandarins and oranges to continue over the next few weeks due to the good internal quality."

The main varieties of garciaBallester are the Navelina Lane Late for oranges and for the mandarins the Clemenules and the Nadorcott in the second/ late season. In the earlier varieties the Clemenrubí and the Oronules are beating Marisol.

"Europe is by far the most important market for Spanish citrus," explains Jorge García Vicent. According to the CEO the competition from Morocco has greatly increased in the last few years. "The Morocco market has evolved rapidly in the last few years and will continue to grow to become one of the biggest competitors for the Spanish market, fore mostly in the second/late season where the Nardorcott is very important."

The garciaBallester group is working on a joint venture with a producer who grows and packs organic citrus and vegetables. "We're not looking for large volumes here, but are looking more for the niche markets with our organic citrus," concludes Jorge García Vicent.

Garcia Ballester will be at the Fruit Attraction in Madrid this week (Stall 10F02).
