Lower Saxony: rich supply of onions

In the German state of Lower Saxony the onion growers are happy with the excellent quality of this year's harvest, reports the German website Proplanta.de. "We had good weather in the period of July to October and were able to harvest the onions dry," says Günter Primke, an onion grower from Uelzen. This means that the quality of the onions from Lower Saxony is much better than that of other states, according to the German 'Landvolk-Pressedienst'.

The good quality, however, did not result in good prices. "We often can't cover the costs," says Primke. Over the next few weeks, however, he is counting on slight increases in price. After a weak harvest last year, the warehouses are well stocked this year. According to the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) there are 16% more onions from Lower Saxony in storage compared to last year.
