Panama: Reactivation of banana sector in Baru

The demise of the Coosemupar Company, enables the reactivation of banana production in 1,700 hectares that will be leased by the former employees of the banana cooperative.

The head of Agricultural Development, Jorge Arango Arias, told Prensa.com that they had recently taken "the first steps so that the transnational company, Chiquita Brands International, might produce in these lands, which will be owned and rented by the workers."

"Recently, the managers of Chiquita stated they wanted to return to Baru and invest $37 million dollars, which could come from the state bank and a bank of Cincinnati, USA".

The former employees of Coosemupar reached an agreement with the government after years of negotiations.
