Aldi builds largest solar plant in Switzerland

The German discount retailer Aldi is committed to sustainable energy, and is investing in the largest solar plant in Switzerland. For this project, Aldi has entered a partnership with the Swiss energy company, CKW.

The roof of the distribution centre in Perlen (kanton Luzern) will have, according to the company, the largest PV-installation in Switzerland. The PV-installation's power cannot exceed 5.8 megawatts. It will have a total area of 45,000 square meters; this is approximately as large as six soccer fields. With an annual production of 5.4 gigawatts, the plant will be able to power 1,100 households.

The PV-installation is planned for 2016. This will be the first PV-installation for Aldi Switzerland. The largest PV-installation in Switzerland at this time was built by Aldi's competitor, Migos, in 2013. This installation is 32,000 square meters big and produces 4.8 gigawatts of energy annually.
