Spain (Castile and Leon): The potato from Salamanca is buried
The potato from Salamanca will stay buried in the future short and medium term as farmers can't start harvesting it because of the delicate situation that the sector, which is in permanent crisis, is going through and because there is no room in the market for their product.
At least that's what the farmers and buyers reiterated as they stated there was still a very high amount of potatoes that hadn't been harvested in the province; the Aranpino cooperative, for example, still has 30 million kilos of potatoes that need to be harvested. "We're going very slowly, we should be at 50% of the production and we are only at 30%, but we need to help our partners," said the president of the cooperative.
In fact, the Jaerla and Red Scarlet varieties prices were the same as last week, while the sour variety fell ten Euro, even though the sector unanimously says, "there is currently no price in the market."
Additionally, the French potato is pressuring the Spanish market, which will further slow the harvest and sales of the domestic crop. There is an oversupply, not only in Salamanca, but also in all the provinces of Castile and León, Galicia and the rest of northern Spain.
