Mexico: Frost threatening vegetable crops

The threat of frost began affecting growers from 15 December, although actions had already been taken to prevent any possible complications with their crops.

The president of Yaqui and Mayo's Vegetable Producers Association, Carlos Alberto Esquer López, mentioned that there were already problems last year with frost affecting some squash crops; however, to date no issues have been reported this year.

He pointed out that 90% of this season's authorised acreage has already been taken care of, and the process will finish in the next few days. He said that currently transplants of chili peppers and other crops are being carried out.

He added that, like every year, preventive actions have been taken, such as increasing irrigation when temperatures reach zero degrees Celsius and using plastic covers to prevent plants from burning.

Furthermore, Esquer López said that prices in the market have been average, and despite there being oversupply in vegetables, the quality standards allow for sales to be profitable to producers.
