Spain: Consumption of organic produce up 25%

One of the few Spanish sectors actually growing in spite of the crisis, is the organic market. In the Catalan region of Tierras de la Ebro producers have noted a 25% rise in sales. Production has been steadily climbing in the past years, but in the last couple of months sales have gone up even more. Not a bad accomplishment for an industry cultivating without the aid of pesticides.

Manel Batalla, owner of an organic produce shop in Tortosa, states that organically produced fruit and vegetables sells better than anything else. According to UOC adviser Juanjo Cáceres the sector owes its growth to consumer awareness in healthy products. He signals an increasing target group of middle-aged, well-informed people with more money to spend.

The acreage dedicated to organic agriculture in Catalonia has increased with 10% a year. In the Tarragona province 10,000 hectares is devoted to ecological produce.
