Austria: Vegetable production down

According to recent data by Statistik Austria the country produced 615,700 tons of vegetables this year, a 13% drop compared to last year. The total amount of available acreage has decreased with 7% and some of the crops suffered from frost or drought, causing a considerable decline in yields.

Although greenhouse vegetables showed a slightly higher percentage (+2%), the production of cabbage and leafy vegetables did not surpass last year’s, even dropping a percentage. The production of legumes, root vegetables and onions is down 23% compared to 2011.

Garlic cultivation was given a 35% expansion, resulting in a 520-ton harvest, 7% more than in 2011. The cultivation of peas was cut however, the 45% reduction leading to a meagre 4,500-ton harvest (-64%).
