Peru: Raspberry and paprika production in Piura is being promoted

Sierra Exportadora and the Special Project of Irrigation and Hydropower of Alto Piura (PEIHAP), signed an agreement to jointly develop and implement projects of development of the production chains of bamboo, aguaymanto, raspberry,
paprika, asparagus, broccoli and artichokes, in the districts of Yamango, Lalaquiz (MorropĆ³n Province) and San Juan de Bigote and Canchague (Huancabamba Province).

PEIHAP will take Huancabamba River waters through a trans-Andean tunnel to Rio Alto Piura, which will be kept behind a dam so as to generate 300 mega watts of electricity for the entire north of the country. The large amount of stored water will improve the irrigation of 30,000 hectares of farmland and incorporate, at a first stage, 19 000 new hectares.

In this regard, the general manager of PEIHAP, Pedro Mendoza Guerrero, said that the project has gone from being one of infrastructure to being a productive project to improve the living standards of the population in the area of influence.

For his part, the President of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velasquez Tuesta, said the agreement is immediately enforceable (since it already has approved resources), and seeks to install product demonstration plots that count with a safe market.
