On Monday the 17th of December the first Indian pomegranates will arrive at Levarht again. "The season runs up until May and we get weekly arrivals," says Frank Levarht. The company from Aalsmeer has been working together with INL Farms India on the import of pomegranates since 2006 and takes care of the cultivation support for it. The pomegranates are sold under the brand Kimaye.
INl Farms India is GlobalGap and ISO 22000 certified and will also carry the Fair Trade brand within two years. The company grows the Bagwha variety. The pomegranates can be packaged customer specifically. Levarht looks towards the season with confidence. "The demand for pomegranates is increasing quickly world wide, for fresh and processed produce, such as seeds, juice and wine. Last year there were no residue exceedences and this year once again the residue tests will be done in both India and on arrival."
"India is the largest pomegranate producer in the world, with a yearly production of 900,000 tonnes. We are supplied the pomegranates from various different Indian cultivation areas. The largest production area is the state Maharashtra, where the Baramati and Nashik cultivation areas can be found. Due to the drought there will be around 40% less pomegranates from Baramati this year. Nashik has had rain and will be at the same level as last year," says Frank Levarht.
According to the importer the total export to the European Union will be around 120 containers. The transit time from India to Rotterdam is around 20/22 days. Levarht's pomegranates have a brix of 15-17 kg and a net weight of 3.5 kilo. The importer supplies the sizes 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16 in volumes of 220 per pallet.
