Netherlands: Interest in Dutch horticulture in Taiwan

The Dutch University of Wageningen (UR Glastuinbouw) actively supports the development of sustainable horticulture in Taiwan. In 2011 and 2012, with government backing, a project was set up to educate the Taiwanese community. Early November Silke Hemming, Ep Heuvelink and Bas Speetjens visited the country.

On the agenda was a visit to the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) in Taichung and the National Taiwan University in Taipei. There were two seminars that contributed to the knowledge and building networks between research, industry and government in Taiwan and the Netherlands. Both of these were facilitated by the Council of Agriculture.

The first seminar took place at TARI. Silke Hemming gave a presentation on modern vegetable propagation and the finer points of crop management. Bas Speetjens spoke about the possibilities of an adaptive greenhouse for the development of subtropical horticulture. During the second seminar at National Taiwan University all three visitors outlined the potential of applying Dutch horticultural techniques in subtropical areas. Both technical as well as crop physiological aspects were discussed extensively. Hemming also presented possibilities of electricity-producing greenhouse concepts for the future.

The seminars:

Ep Heuvelink and Silke Hemming:
Modern greenhouse crop production -physiology and management

Bas Speetjens:
The design of greenhouses in sub-tropical areas – from crop to economics

Silke Hemming:
Development of electricity producing greenhouses – two case studies
