Colombian Prosecution reopens case against Chiquita Brands

Colombia's General Prosecutors Office stated that there is evidence of connivance between the firm and paramilitaries.

Due to this, Eduardo Montealegre reopened the investigation regarding the money that Uraba and Magdalena's paramilitaries received from the banana multinational.

The investigation involves thirteen executives of the firm. The prosecutor added that it is in the interest of the Prosecutor's Office to establish which other banana growers in the area contributed money to the United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia.

In March this year, one of Medellin's prosecutors controversially closed the case, for which several executives of the firm are being investigated.

In Colombia and the United States the firm assures that they were forced to pay the paramilitaries to protect the lives of its employees.
