Peru: Hass avocado to enter Japanese market next year

Luís Fernando Helguero, commercial adviser in Tokyo, has announced that the Peruvian Hass avocado will be introduced to Japanese markets next year, bringing in an expected turnover of 2 million USD.

Japan’s Health Department, he says, allows the avocado to enter without restrictions or treatments. The decree was made on the basis of an investigation by the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Agraria (Senasa), falling under the Ministry of Agriculture. The adviser goes on to say that other Peruvian export products, like citrus and grapes, are undergoing the same procedure. “We don’t yet know when these investigations will be completed.” The certification of the mango, he says, took about five years.

Peruvian export, Helguero states, has grown with 30% this year.
