"Fresh supplies every other day"

Van Walderveen kicks off Spanish carrots and cauliflower season

This week sees the arrival of the carrot and cauliflower season, at least at Dutch vegetable company Walderveen in Nieuwegein. The first truck with Spanish produce arrived at the company yesterday. The Spanish carrot is marketed under the label "Fresh Quality". The cauliflower will be headed under the familiar Buenavista brand. Van Walderveen has been buying its cauliflower at La Pequeña Holanda for years now; the Spanish grower cultivates the vegetable exclusively for the Dutch company.

"The acreage has been extended again this year," says Bas van Walderveen. "This season we expect fresh supplies every other day. The weather in the Seville region has been excellent, with moderate temperatures and some rain."

"It's too early to say how the market will turn out," the importer thinks. "It fully depends on the conditions in the Murcia region. If the weather goes foul, the price will be better. Right now the market is still saturated with domestic produce, but demands for fresh cauliflower are starting to pour in."
