Mexico will export melon to the U.S. and Canada

Melon producers from Galaje, Ixtlahuacán municipality (Mexico), signed an agreement with the marketing company EH Maldonado & Co, with the aim of reviving 50 acres to produce Honey Dew melon for export to the west of the United States and the east coast of Canada.

Rural Development Secretary of the State Government, Adalberto Zamarroni Cisneros explained that within the strategies developed by the State Government for the competitiveness and development of the rural sector, as reflected in the National Development Plan 2009-2015, it has both idle and active infrastructure. From this infrastructure, the reactivation project of those areas that have high potential for production will be realised.

He added that in El Galage 50 hectares will be reactivated with pressurized irrigation systems, and with a business plan that will allow melon production.

It has to be pointed out that the agreement between the production and trade company Juarez SPR de RL Ixtlahuacán and Maldonado EH & Co. company, is to trade directly over 1,500 tons of melon per season. This represents the production of 2,100 fruit boxes with export quality, that will generate 2 million dollars in foreign exchange.

Also 60 direct jobs and many more indirect jobs will be created, helping the development in this region of the State of Colima. The Seder's holder stressed that 100% of the area will be secured to establish the concept of contract farming.

It is worth pointing out that so far in the state of Colima, 10 products are grown under contract farming: tamarind, blueberry, blackberry, papaya, Mexican lime,
melon, ornamental plants, watermelon, coconut and salt.
