Venezuela: Vegetable production to increase by 70%

To continue developing agro-productive systems and contribute to the food safety of Venezuelans, the governor, Francisco Rangel Gómez, will inaugurate the Agricultural Centre "Ezequiel Zamora" in the coming weeks, which aims to increase vegetable production in the state of Bolivar.

This new complex, located at kilometre 64 of the Leopoldo Sucre Figarella motorway, is almost finished being built (90%). It has 12 greenhouses for controlled-environment agriculture of 800 m2 each, destined to the production of vegetables and one greenhouse for the production of vegetable and fruit tree seedlings.

The idea for the creation of this centre happened in the framework of the twinning agreement between Cuba and Venezuela; alliance which greatly facilitated the provision of technical and specialised advice and high-end equipment and materials for the construction of the greenhouses.

The greenhouses project at a national level, within this same framework, is led by the National Agricultural Research Institute (INIA), which assigned the 12 production greenhouses and the one for seedlings to Bolivar's Regional Institute for Technology and Agricultural Development (Irtab); an institution under Bolivar state's government.

The 12 greenhouses will produce tomato, pepper, cucumber, courgette, aubergine, chive, coriander and parsley, with a capacity of 700,000 kilos per year, while the seedlings greenhouse will annually produce a million seedlings for tomato, pepper, lettuce, courgette, cucumber, aubergine, passion fruit and papaya, among others.
