Honduras: Banana exports will reach USD 450 million this year

Banana exports will exceed USD 450 million this year. Export grew by USD 52 million more than in 2011, especially because of the tendency of prices to increase. This has been registered in the international market.

The export value could be the highest in the last decade, including last year
when 27 million 40-pound boxes were traded for USD 397.8 million.

Only in the first eight months of this year, foreign sales of this product exceeded USD 301 million.

This agricultural product recorded increases of 12.4 percent in export volumes due to higher yields in production, induced by improved fertilization and pest control.

Additionally it reports 3.1 percent growth in international prices, particularly in the United States, which appears as the main buyer.

Until 1993, this sector was generating more foreign exchange, but was quickly displaced by coffee, after Europe had approved tariff and quota systems for fruit from Latin American countries.
