Heero Gramsma, Nedato:

Netherlands: “Demand for potatoes will hold”

Dutch Potato company Nedato has been in business for almost 50 years. With a turnover of 350,000 tons a year Nedato is one of the major potato companies in Europe. Core activities include the handling and selling of potatoes designated for consumption (40%) and those labelled for the processing industry (60%).

“Right now, the demand is great and I couldn’t think of a reason why it wouldn’t remain so,” says Heero Gramsma of Nedato. “Demand from Belgium and the UK is sky-high. This is especially good for the growers, who can once again make a decent living this year. About the price, I think it will hold, but you can never be sure. Not all potatoes have been harvested yet, and you can’t predict what the market will do in the coming weeks.”

Nedato doesn’t just cultivate the potatoes, it’s involved in the entire chain leading to the consumer. Gramsma doesn’t notice any particular preferences for special varieties. “It’s basically the same as last year. We supplied [Dutch retailer] Albert Heijn with new annotated packaging, giving customers much more information about the product.”
