France: Victoria pineapple one of the most expensive in the world

The Victoria pineapple from La Réunion is a relatively unknown variety. The small, sweet fruit is mainly cultivated on Réunion, a French island with a population of about 800,000 located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. According to the Agricultural Chamber of the country, about 14,000 tons of pineapple is produced annually. Of this output, 1,600 tons is marked for export.

It’s not always easy for growers of pineapple to make a living, especially now that taxes are raised and the prices for raw materials are up. This year there’s the added aggravation of on-going drought.

The Victoria, one of the most expensive pineapples in the world, is mostly shipped to France, although there is increasing demand from Russia.
